Where and how to start solids with your little human

Please note the information in this blog is general in nature and should not replace the support and advice from your health care provider. If you have concerns or questions about your individual situation, please contact your chosen healthcare provider.

I’m so excited you have found this blog, I think the second most favourite thing about babies, zero to five, is starting solids and the transition through food and right through to toddler food. For those of you who are new here I am Rebecca Bradshaw is a rural woman, mother, wife and the founder of Rural Child Health. I'm a child health nurse and clinical nurse who has dedicated nearly two decades to helping rural and isolated mothers throughout their parenthood journeys. I'm also a lover of all things chocolate, English breakfast tea and it totally matters what cup you have your tea out of.

When exactly should you start introducing solids to your little one?

It's a question that can get different answers depending on who you ask. Pediatricians may suggest around four months, while child health nurses might lean towards six months. But the real key is to look for signs of readiness, typically between four to six months.

Signs your baby may be ready to start solids.

First off, let's talk about those adorable cues your baby might give you. Picture this: you're enjoying a meal, and suddenly your baby's eyes light up with curiosity. They watch intently as you take a bite, then mimic your chewing motions. It's both heartwarming and slightly guilt-inducing (because who can resist those eyes while eating?).

Another sign to watch for is the decrease in the tongue thrust reflex. This reflex, which causes babies to push out their tongues when something touches their mouths, starts to diminish as they become ready for solids.  Finally, your baby should be able to sit upright unaided for a short period, as slouching doesn't make for efficient feeding sessions.

Do you need any special gear?

Let's talk gear. A good highchair is essential, but it doesn't need to break the bank. Look for one with a sturdy base, a tray for easy cleanup, and most importantly, proper foot support. Just like adults need good seating, babies require stable support to focus on their meal instead of struggling to maintain balance.

What about the big question: what to feed them and when?

Meat, surprisingly, is a great starting point due to its iron content. This is crucial for babies around six months old, especially if they're no longer solely breastfeeding. Here's the best part: you can choose between traditional purees or the newer baby-led weaning approach—or even a mix of both.

It's all about what works for you and your baby.

Gone are the days of introducing one food every three days. Nowadays, as long as there's no significant allergy risk, feel free to get creative with combinations. Yes, even if you're skeptical about beetroot and pear together—your baby's palate is a blank canvas waiting for your artistic touch.

When it comes to portions, don't stress about filling up that tablespoon too much. Remember, it's more about exploring flavours and textures than meeting nutritional quotas. Morning feeds might be easier, as babies tend to be happier and more receptive then, giving you the whole day to monitor for any adverse reactions.

Remember hydration!

Introduce water alongside meals, gradually transitioning to cups or sippy cups.

As your little one grows, mix up mealtime routines to keep things interesting and nutrient-rich. Leftovers for breakfast? Why not! Starting solids is as much about creating positive mealtime experiences as it is about nutrition. So relax, enjoy the messy moments, and embrace the journey—one spoonful at a time.
