Texture Exploration - How do we do it?

Let's talk texture exploration!

Please note the information in this blog is general in nature and should not replace the support and advice from your health care provider. If you have concerns or questions about your individual situation, please contact your chosen healthcare provider.

I’m so excited you have found this blog, for those of you who are new here I am Rebecca Bradshaw! A rural woman, mother, wife and the founder of Rural Child Health. I'm a child health nurse and clinical nurse who has dedicated nearly two decades to helping rural and isolated mothers throughout their parenthood journeys. My goal is happier, healthier and more connected families. I'm also a lover of all things chocolate, English breakfast tea and it totally matters what cup you have your tea out of. ๐Ÿซ–

My second most favourite thing about babies, zero to five, is starting solids and the transition through food and right through to toddler food. This blog is the perfect spot for you if you have been feeling a little confused about how to make sure the food you offer is safe for your little human. If you’ve been wondering how and when to introduce solids start with this blog here.

When it comes to introducing solids to your little one, whether you're leaning towards purees or baby-led weaning, flexibility is key. As busy moms with loads to juggle, convenience and safety are paramount. ๐Ÿคน

So, let's break it down.

Between 4 to 6 months ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฅ‘๐Ÿ

Between four to six months, we start with super soft, squishable textures or purees. Think mashed banana or avocado, providing a gentle introduction to solid foods. After about a month, we gradually introduce lumps, transitioning from purees to mashed versions of fruits and veggies. It's all about progressing at a pace that works for you and your baby.

Now, here's where the fun begins. We can mix things up by adding chunky fruit into custard or offering pasta spirals for your little one to explore. These soft but munchable options help develop their dexterity and fine motor skills, setting the stage for more adventurous eating.

Where are we progressing to? ๐Ÿ

As we progress, we move towards bite-sized pieces of food that are easy for tiny hands to pick up and munch on. The goal? By the time they hit the 12-month mark, we want them to comfortably handle and enjoy the same textures as what's on your plate. But here's an interesting tidbit: it's perfectly normal for your little one to show a preference for your food over theirs, even if it's the exact same thing. This stems from a primitive safety mechanism—if it's safe for you, it's safe for them. So why not embrace it? Share a meal together, let them explore your plate, or set out a little shared plate for both of you to enjoy.

Why transition through different textures?

Transitioning through textures isn't just about feeding; it's also a significant safety measure. By exposing your baby to a variety of textures, you're helping them develop the skills they need to handle different foods safely.

So, whether you're mashing, mixing, or offering finger foods, remember to keep it fun, light, and full of exploration. After all, every munchable moment is a step towards building a healthy relationship with food. Enjoy the journey—one bite at a time!
